How to Calculate Roof Square Footage

  1. Measure the horizontal footprint. Enter the building length and width. The overhang field expands each dimension by twice the entered amount.
  2. Select the pitch. A 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Use the pitch from your plans or a reliable measurement.
  3. Apply the multiplier. Multiply horizontal area by the pitch factor to get sloped surface area.

If your dimensions already include the eaves, set overhang to zero. Adding overhang again counts the edge twice. The equal-overhang option assumes the same projection on all four sides of a rectangular building; it does not model irregular eaves.

Worked example: 40 × 30 ft, 1 ft overhang, 8/12 pitch

The expanded footprint is 42 × 32 = 1,344 sq ft. The exact pitch multiplier is √(1 + (8 ÷ 12)²), approximately 1.2018504. The sloped area is 1,615.29 sq ft, or 16.15 roofing squares. With 10% waste and three bundles per square, round 53.3046 upward to 54 bundles.

Sloped roof area = horizontal footprint × multiplier

The factor applies to the total horizontal projection of a roof with one consistent pitch. A simple gable roof does not need its result multiplied by two again: its two sides already cover the footprint. For mixed pitches, calculate each section using its own projected area and pitch.

How Many Roofing Squares Do I Need?

One roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. If a roof’s actual sloped area is already known to be 2,000 sq ft, it contains exactly 20 squares before waste. A 2,000 sq ft house footprint is different: it still needs the pitch adjustment.

The bundle estimate defaults to three bundles per square, but packaging varies. Enter the product’s actual bundle count per square. Apply waste to the unrounded surface area, then round up the final bundle count. Starter courses, ridge caps and separate accessories are not added by this tool.

Overhangs, Mixed Pitches and Material Waste

A single rectangle works best for a simple roof whose projected footprint is rectangular and whose slopes share one pitch. Dormers, additions, intersecting rooflines and multiple pitches need separate measurements. Add the section areas only after ensuring no projected region is counted twice.

Building living area is not always the roof footprint. A two-story home may list the combined floor area of both stories, while the roof covers only the building’s ground projection. Garages, covered porches and extensions can add roof area outside the main house footprint.

The waste percentage affects estimated material coverage and bundle count, not the reported net roof surface. Change it according to the layout and supplier guidance. Valleys and complicated cuts can change material demand even where the net surface area stays the same.

How do you calculate square footage on a roof?

Multiply the horizontal roof footprint by the factor for its pitch. A 40 × 30 ft footprint at 8/12 has approximately 1,442.22 sq ft of sloped surface without overhang. Adding a 1 ft overhang on every side changes the footprint to 42 × 32 ft and the result to approximately 1,615.29 sq ft.

How many squares is a 2000 sq ft roof?

If 2,000 sq ft is the measured sloped roof surface, the answer is exactly 20 roofing squares before waste. If it describes the horizontal house footprint instead, apply pitch first. At 6/12, a 2,000 sq ft footprint produces about 2,236.07 sq ft of roof, or 22.36 squares, before overhang and material allowance.

How big is a roof on a 1400 sq ft house?

The answer depends on whether 1,400 sq ft is the horizontal footprint or total living area, and on pitch and overhang. A 1,400 sq ft footprint at 6/12 produces about 1,565.25 sq ft of sloped roof without overhang. Multiple stories and attached roof sections require their own measurements rather than a living-area shortcut.

How many squares is a 10x10 roof?

A 10 × 10 ft horizontal footprint at 8/12 produces approximately 120.19 sq ft of sloped roof, or 1.20 squares. At three bundles per square, that is four bundles without waste or four with 10% waste. If 10 × 10 describes the actual sloped surface instead, the area is exactly one square.
