How to Calculate Pea Gravel You Need
- Find the area. Multiply length by width for a rectangle. For a circle, use π multiplied by the radius squared; the radius is half the diameter.
- Convert depth to feet. Divide inches by 12. A 2-inch layer is exactly one-sixth of a foot deep.
- Convert volume to weight. Multiply area by depth, divide by 27 for cubic yards, and multiply by the selected density in US tons per cubic yard.
Worked example: 10 × 10 ft at 2 inches
The net volume is 16.6667 cubic feet, or 0.617284 cubic yards. At the example density of 1.4 US tons per cubic yard, that is 0.864198 tons. Adding 10% gives 0.679012 cubic yards and 0.950617 tons, approximately 1,901.23 lb. Dividing by 50 lb and rounding up gives 39 bags.
Without the allowance, the same weight-based method gives 35 bags. A bag labeled by volume may have a different stated coverage. Use that product’s actual volume rather than combining its coverage with an unrelated density assumption.

Increasing a layer from 2 to 3 inches raises its volume by 50%. A uniform-depth estimate assumes a level prepared base. If the base is uneven, measure several points and estimate sections separately when differences are substantial.
How Much Area Will a Ton or a Bag Cover?
The following values use 1.4 US short tons per cubic yard and a 50 lb bag. They exclude waste. The bag column is calculated by weight using that same density, rather than assuming every bag covers 0.5 cubic feet.

One cubic yard weighs 2,800 lb at this density, equivalent to 56 bags weighing 50 lb each. One ton occupies approximately 0.714286 cubic yards. These are model assumptions for an estimate; moisture, product grading and the supplier’s measurement method can change actual density.
Tons vs Cubic Yards vs Bags
US tons = cubic yards × density in US tons/yd³
Weight-based bags = round up(US tons × 2,000 ÷ bag lb)
A US short ton is 2,000 lb. A metric tonne is a different weight unit. Switching the dimension controls to metric changes meters and centimeters, while the ton output remains explicitly labeled US short tons. Confirm the unit on your supplier’s quotation before comparing prices.
The density input is editable because there is no single precise density that describes every pea gravel delivery. Request an estimated weight per cubic yard for the product you will actually receive. If the supplier sells by volume, the cubic-yard output is often the most direct quantity to discuss.
Plan a Bulk or Bagged Order
For bulk material, ask about available delivery quantities, truck access and placement. The number of tons a particular truck can carry depends on that truck and local operating limits. A calculator should not turn a generic “truckload” into a fixed volume.
For bags, compare labeled weight and coverage. Bag quantity is always rounded up after the allowance is applied. Keeping the net volume and allowance separate makes it easier to compare a supplier’s quote with the ground area you actually want to cover.
Allowance is not a measured compaction factor. If your contractor specifies a compacted depth and the supplier quotes loose delivered volume, ask for the conversion appropriate to that material. Rounded pea gravel may move within its edging rather than compact like a graded crushed base.
